Did he dazzle you with his extensive knowledge of mineral water or was it his in-depth analysis of Marky Mark that finally reeled you in?
So here I go traipsing perilously into US Magazine territory, but bear with me, there’s good music herewith. AOL Spinner blog posted a slideshow the other day of the 20+ musicians that Winona Ryder has been romantically linked to over the years. Quite unfathomable — it reads like the most-played list on my iPod [er, no pun intended]. Amongst the mostly-vicious comments on the original post was this laughable one:
“She dated MICHAEL NESMITH? UGH. If you’re planning to date a Monkee, then choose Mickey Dolenz because at least he could sing.
On the other hand, don’t choose ANY Monkee.”
Take these things with a grain of salt, sure, but as I clicked through the somewhat unbelievable slideshow of dudes, I said out loud, several times, “SHUT UP.” If it’s true, someone get this woman a Gatorade.
. . . and then I agreed with the person who sent this to me that said I should make a mix of all their music. Clearly.
THE WINONA RYDER DATE-NIGHT MIX
Open All Night (live in Boulder) – Counting Crows
Does He Love You – Rilo Kiley
Runaway Train – Soul Asylum
Question – Old 97s
How Do You Do – Dave Grohl
She – The Monkees
Tongue (live) – Damien Rice
Into Your Arms (acoustic) – The Lemonheads
Easy/Lucky/Free – Bright Eyes
Well It’s True That We Love One Another – White Stripes
Sweet Leilani – Chris Isaak
Shake Shake (Black Tambourine remix by Ad Rock) – Beck
Just Another (live in Jersey) – Pete Yorn
Seein’ Her – Paul Westerberg
Nobody Girl – Ryan Adams
I Want You – Third Eye Blind
Good Vibrations – Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch
My reaction was: “Johnny Depp AND Damien Rice… how unfair is life?!”
Can’t blame her!

I lolled
Also – hurrah for a decent copy of Seein’ Her at last!

great mix idea as well as the songs themselves.

Heather… a bit of dark side you’re showing there, what? : )
I was hoping for more puns. Surely something from the Sound of Music would fit the bill.

This mix is awesome. She is to music what Alyssa Milano is to baseball.

I’ve had my photo taken with lots of musicians, too…. Doesn’t mean I’ve been romantically linked to them. But if I was famous, it sure would.

Just listened to the mix as well. Very nice, thanks again.

I think I have lost some respect for a number of these guys.

I have a job in which I regularly deal with celebrities. Of all the many celebrities I have encountered in my career, Winona Ryder has been the most hideous. She’s vile. For real.

I think you forgot one

I always like to see a Jay Farrar name drop. But was this a joke? I think Jay has been dating/married to the same girl for like forever….but I could be wrong.

Hey! What’s wrong with the Monkees?! Oh wait…nevermind.

Friggin brilliant, flippin sweet, and a genius idea!

Jay Farrar married the gal he was dating back in the UT days, before they even really broke nationally. Pretty much qualifies as forever.

She dated Everlast, and Kid Rock? Ugh.
Dating Ryan Adams and Rhett Miller is kind of weird because the two of them had a long lasting feud.
Dating Adam Duritz and Ryan Adams is kinda weird because those two guys are good friends.
Michael Nesmith can’t sing? In the 70′s, he was a Country Rock pioneer. His song “Some of Shelley’s Blues” is absolutely fantastic. That said, it is a little creepy for him to be dating her.
Matthew Sweet doesn’t belong in the mix, because even though the song is about her, he didn’t know her…quote from an article:
“Another song on Girlfriend with a link to loneliness and movie actresses is “Winona,” with its plaintive chorus, “Won’t you be my little movie star.” “Actually, Lloyd Cole suggested I call it that,” Sweet explained. “I didn’t have a title for a long time and he knew that I liked the movie Heathers. He thought that we should call it `Winona’ because I wanted a kind of a country title and at the time she was still a lot more obscure. First of all it didn’t occur to me that there would be a lot of people giving attention to anything I did. And second of all it didn’t occur to me that people would think that it was about her. Then by the time the record came out she had actually heard the song through a guy at Rolling Stone and supposedly liked it so I thanked my friend for sending it to her because at the time I didn’t think the record was even going to come out. It was a really dark period and I thought, `Well at least Winona Ryder heard my record.’ “”

though i challenge mark wahlberg as a musician i am so speechlessly jealous of winona. seriously, at least 5 of the guys in your mix are on my “freebie” list!!!! yet another great heather mix. thanks!
kristen from denver — November 9, 2007 @ 6:24 pm
Actually, “Rollerskate Skinny” would have been an even better choice for the Old 97′s/Rhett Miller since it was about her. Fun mix!

this is such a keen idea!!!
bravo!
also, i find it quite unfair that list of hers, though i’d once heard her described as a rite of passage to all young musicians.

In Winona’s defense, I think she dated Mike Nesmith JUNIOR not Senior. Don’t ask me how I know this. I just remember it through the mists of time.
Jadis White — November 10, 2007 @ 10:50 pm
What a weird slag against Mike Nesmith. Not only the only talented Monkee, but also the man behind “Different Drum”. But yeah, he’s old enough to be her grandpa or something.
myron — November 12, 2007 @ 2:26 pm
Man, I can’t stop listening to this mix.
I have to say, everytime I hear the Marky Mark track I get a little embarrassed. I’m not sure if I’m embarrassed for me (I *adored* this song as a teen and I kinda still do) or for Mark Wahlberg, who clearly has springboarded from this to a credible career.
He was like *this* close to becoming another tragic Vanilla Ice character.

Um… speaking of whom, did Winona ever date Vanilla Ice?
dot — November 16, 2007 @ 10:11 am
Can you re-post these songs? Thanks
