sunset’s just my lightbulb burning out

I’ve long had loud, clattery, live cover versions of this song in my arsenal of cry-into-your-coffee music, but thankfully Adam Duritz sat himself down in a quiet room with his piano and a will last week to record a bunch of Valentine’s Day cover songs, and this was the fruit.

Oh My Sweet Carolina (Ryan Adams) – Adam Duritz

Other songs he posted for download last week included versions of material from Steve Earle, Tom Waits, and Bob Dylan. God bless the internet and prolific musicians at home.

  • You know, for as much as I grew out of them after Recovering the Satellites, there is still something so magnetic and comforting about Adam Duritz just sitting down with a guitar and playing. There have been a number of times where my iPod has picked the demo of ‘Shallow Days’ during a shuffle session and it just stops me dead each time and immediately puts me in a great mood. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Over the last 6 months or so Adam has been pretty prolific on twitter. He has played twitter DJ, over Thanksgiving I think, posting boots of songs he really likes from other bands. He also recently posted a recording of him on piano singing Barely Out of Tuesday, which is a rare treat.

  • I noticed last Monday or Tuesday that he was basically narrating the process of recording and posting a week’s worth of covers in semi-real time on Twitter, and thought the whole project was really interesting, somewhere between an album release party and a really slow concert.

Love to see more artists try something like this.

The link seems to go just to the main Crows website, though; am I missing something?

"I love the relationship that anyone has with music: because there's something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. It's the best part of us, probably, the richest and strangest part..."

"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel."

Mp3s are for sampling purposes, kinda like when they give you the cheese cube at Costco, knowing that you'll often go home with having bought the whole 7 lb. spiced Brie log. They are left up for a limited time. If you LIKE the music, go and support these artists, buy their schwag, go to their concerts, purchase their CDs/records and tell all your friends. Rock on.
