I’ve had this one in my queue for months now, and heartily singing it out the other day in my car made me finally decide to post it up. This is a rockin’ little pop song, written by Noel Gallagher from Oasis and Evan Dando from The Lemonheads. According to Dando, speaking around the time of the release of Definitely Maybe: “We met about a month ago and hit it off, then last night we collided in Paris. We’d both been playing the Lowlands festival in Holland this weekend and we wrote a song together called ‘Purple Parallelogram.’”
The ten best albums of ALL TIME, according to a British poll released yesterday:
1: Definitely Maybe – Oasis 2: Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – The Beatles 3: Revolver - The Beatles 4: OK Computer – Radiohead 5: (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? – Oasis 6: Nevermind – Nirvana 7: The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses 8: Dark Side Of The Moon – Pink Floyd 9: The Queen Is Dead – The Smiths 10: The Bends – Radiohead
Ûž Speaking of those reigning champions, Scatter O’Light has a little live Oasis set and a lovely picture of some Italian soccer players. Mmmm. But where’s Batistuta? I don’t even know who he’s playing for these days, but there was a time when he and I were tight.
Ûž Jennings at rbally has an amazing Van Morrison bootleg from Fillmore West in San Francisco, circa 1970, nine years before wee Heather was even thought of. But I wish I could have been there.
Ûž Pearl Jam has a new video for Life Wasted. I tried to watch it and all the gory bloody heads (a la the new album art) kind of turned me off, but the concept is way cool: “In its latest bid to show its progressive side, popular band Pearl Jam has just released its latest music video, “Life Wasted,” under a Creative Commons license. That means, according to Creative Commons creative director Eric Steuer, that anyone will be able to ‘legally copy, distribute and share the clip’ for noncommercial purposes. Steuer thinks that this is the first music video from a major record label to be so licensed. But either way, it’s a great step forward for those who believe that content can be both protected and shared, something the record companies and the movie studios usually don’t seem to believe.”
And this is a really great in-store video from this weekend up in Seattle with Nada Surf performing “What Is Your Secret” (complete with forgotten lyrics and laughter).
I love the immediacy of YouTube, as well as the educational value. For example, in addition to great in-store musical performances, I also learned that Lindsay Lohan is apparently a firecrotch. What an adjective.
“Grown Iraqi men get misty-eyed by the mere mention of his name. ‘I love Lionel Richie,’ they say. Iraqis who do not understand a word of English can sing an entire Lionel Richie song.”
One of the freshest sounding releases I bought last summer was De Nova from The Redwalls, whom I mentioned a few days ago in my post about OK Go. Some of you expressed an interest in learning more about them, so here you go (look how easy that was).
When I first heard “It’s Love You’re On” by The Redwalls last February, I thought they were some ’60s band I’d never heard before – pleasing vocal harmonies, catchy hooks, a great crunchy sound. This Chicago quartet (vocalist/guitarist Logan Baren, vocalist/bassist Justin Baren, vocalist/guitarist Andrew Langer, and drummer Ben Greeno) ranges in dewy-fresh age from 20 to 22 years old, but sound much more mature to me, musically.
I was blown away seeing them live. Four young guys, shaggy dark hair, tight pants, pointed boots – like straight-up British Invasion brought back to life (oh wait, did it ever die?). They looked so young; I remember telling my friend Heidi that I felt like we were at a high school talent show (albeit one of very high caliber, minus the teenage band names like Janitors Against Apartheid and Liquid Courage). These kids have stage presence and swagger galore (although, really, who at 22 opening for all these great bands *wouldn’t* swagger just a tad?).

"I love the relationship that anyone has with music: because there's something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. It's the best part of us, probably, the richest and strangest part..."
—Nick Hornby, Songbook
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel." —Hunter S. Thompson
Mp3s are for sampling purposes, kinda like when they give you the cheese cube at Costco, knowing that you'll often go home with having bought the whole 7 lb. spiced Brie log. They are left up for a limited time. If you LIKE the music, go and support these artists, buy their schwag, go to their concerts, purchase their CDs/records and tell all your friends. Rock on.
